On Thursday July 28th, Minnie Valero demonstrated to a curious crowd at LJCC the process and challenges of painting on Yupo as a substrate for watercolor . Minnie is an award winning watercolorist and enjoys the challenge inherent in using Yupo; its non-absorbent surface resists the watercolor making it tricky to apply and unpredictable at times. But the result is vibrant and fresh.

Minnie prepared two different scenes at various stages of completion to be able to demonstrate the process of creating a painting on Yupo. Each layer requires dry time in between so as to keep the colors from running into one another (unless that effect is desired). It was a fascinating demo followed by the chance to try painting on Yupo by the attendees.

Please mark your calendar for the 4th Thursday of each month to join us for our monthly Demo series. On August 25th from 4-6pm, Sherry Roper will be our featured artist. Sherry is an accomplished, award-winning representational oil and watercolor painter, so it's sure to an intriguing demo full of great information. To see samples of Sherry's work, click here.

Yupo is a 100% polypropylene surface used for many things... including watercolor. The watercolors are not absorbed by the surface: the water evaporates, and the pigment remains strongly attached, and the colors brilliant. It’s quite challenging, as water moves on the surface, requiring some practice to control its movement, and more time to dry than the traditional absorbent watercolor paper.

This month Minnie Valero, LJAA President, will be demonstrating how to paint using watercolors on Yupo as the substrate. The demonstration will take place on the third Thursday of this month - July 28th from 4-6pm at the La Jolla Community Center. This demonstration is free and open to the public. (Proof of vaccination or recent negative COVID test is required as well as a mask.)

Born and raised in Argentina, Minnie has drawn and painted her whole life for pleasure. After raising a family and pursuing a career in public education, she retired in 2005. It was then that she started exhibiting watercolors, pastels, and oils both in California and France, at first, and have since expanded to exhibiting in other European countries and Asia. She enjoys watercolors when traveling for their convenience. Minnie paints with pleasure and passion - and it shows in her work!

Please join us for what is sure to be a unique and fun demonstration!
