Composition Workshop

On Thursday, November 17th, Dana Levine led an interactive workshop exploring composition. It was an informative and fun afternoon for everyone who attended.

During the workshop Dana covered a number of compositional concepts. She covered the "Rule of Thirds' and showed various examples. Attendees were then able to experiment by doing some simple abstract drawings to create a composition and then work to refine it. She also discussed composition concepts for figure placement in artwork and showed various examples, including several works she has completed of Mexican Dancers that she has photographed, painted and drawn in various compositions, each time experimenting with placement of the figures. Attendees then had a chance to make their own composition using the photos of the dancers.

Two essential elements of a good work of two-dimensional art – no matter the subject or whether it is realistic or abstract - are value and composition. To explore what makes a good composition, we will consider these important ideas when creating an image: - Verticals, horizontals, and diagonals - Focal point and the Rule of Thirds - Overall design: triangular or circular

During the session, participants will sketch and make preliminary designs for three artworks.

Please bring the following materials with you:

- 10 sheets letter sized paper

- Pencil, Charcoal or charcoal pencil

- Eraser

- Ruler

- Scissors

- Scotch Tape

Painting Water using Water-Based Oil Paint

On Thursday, October 27th, LJAA Member and Artist Virginia Howlett, conducted a demonstration of painting a water scene using water-based oil paints. It was a very informative demonstration that was well-attended.

Virginia showed the crowd how she selects a photo reference of water and how she approaches the artistic process to create an impressionistic style painting. She also discussed why she uses water-based oil paints and the differences between water-based oil and acrylic paint or traditional oils. It was an interesting and informative session!
