Water-based oil paints... Isn't that an oxymoron?

As a reminder, La Jolla Art Association is hosting a water-based oil painting demonstration with Artist-Member Virginia Howlett. The demo will be held at the La Jolla Community Center this Thursday, October 27th from 4-6pm. Attendance is free, so invite a friend or two and make it an outing.

Virginia will demonstrate how she uses water-based oils on canvas to create an impressionist-style landscape painting from a reference photo. Many artists prefer water-based oils as they are less toxic than traditional oil paints/solvents. Virginia will discuss the differences between acrylic paint, traditional oils and water-based oils, and describe the difference between photo-realism and impressionist styles of painting. Come Celebrate with Us!

Please come celebrate the opening of our October/November Exhibit. The galleries are hung with over 90 pieces of new art from 13 different artists/members of La Jolla Art Association. The works are in a variety of mediums including oil, watercolor, acrylic, photography and mixed media. Several newer members are showing this month and we're excited to unveil these new works.

Our Artist Reception will be held this Thursday, October 20th from 4-6pm at the La Jolla Community Center. Feel free to bring your friends along to tour the galleries, talk with the participating artists and enjoy light refreshments in the courtyard. We look forward to meeting you!

Water-Based Oil Painting Demo - 10/27

This month La Jolla Art Association will be featuring member-artist Virginia Howlett during it's 4th Thursday Demonstration Series held at La Jolla Community Center. Virginia will demonstrate using water-based oils on canvas to create an impressionist-style landscape painting from a reference photo. Virginia will show the differences between acrylic paint, traditional oils and water-based oils, and describe the difference between photo-realism and impressionist styles of painting. She will be painting an impression of the fluid, reflective surface of water. This is sure to be a fascinating demo, so please mark your calendar and plan to attend - Thursday, October 27th from 4-6pm at LJCC. Attendance is free, so feel invite a friend or two to join you.

Here's a bit of background on Virginia. She creates abstract landscape paintings, photographic collages, and large installation pieces - all inspired by nature. She is fascinated by the contemplative experience of landscape and uses a variety of media to communicate the sense of calm and mystery we feel in the natural world.

She has an MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and was an Assistant Professor of Painting, before a career as a software interaction designer. Virginia creates her work at an island cabin in British Columbia and in her San Diego studio. Her exhibitions include shows in San Diego, Seattle, New Mexico, Virginia, Ohio, and Chicago.
